If you found this page through search engine results, there is a pretty good chance that you are thinking about hiring an online weight loss coach, health coach, or life coach to help you achieve your goals. You may want to seek help losing weight, increasing your energy, improving your motivation, or getting a handle on your busy life. You may not have thought about it this way, but an accountability coach can help you achieve your goals much in the same way a coach helps a professional athlete achieve theirs.
There are many benefits to hiring an accountability coach, whether you are seeking to work with an online health coach or want an in-person approach.
Coaches don’t tell you what to do. They may give advice, or suggest a certain path to accomplishing your goals, but a professionally trained coach doesn’t hand you a program to follow. Any coach worth his or her salt know how to ask the right questions to nudge you into action. These questions will help you challenge your limiting beliefs and focus on your motivating factors so you may develop a deeper understanding of what it is you want to achieve and the person you want to become.
Compare that to the typical “coach” you might find on social media, that sells a “one size fits all” program, detox, or mastermind group. There’s very little to no coaching involved in this approach. You get some tips and tricks to start you off, and you may get some results. But it will be tough to maintain any wins you may accomplish, because there has been no foundational habit change work done.
I bet you could rapidly list off at least 3 things you could be doing that would have a major impact on your life. All of us could. We know what to do most of the time, but without accountability we don’t always follow through. It’s almost impossible to keep yourself accountable, and your friends and family are typically not up to the task. That’s why it pays off big to have someone in your corner to hold you to the highest version of yourself that you can think of.
My clients check in with me for weekly coaching sessions, and also have access to me daily through text and email. I require them to fill out weekly goal sheets, and other “homework” assignments designed to push them towards the goals they paid me to help them achieve.
Most people don’t handle change well. There is a mechanism inside our identity that I like to call “Lizard Brain”. Lizard Brain hates change. It hates change so much that it allows old habit loops to resurface after you have tried to suppress them. It tricks you into thinking that you are just “born that way”, and you’ll never accomplish your goals because of external circumstances that are beyond your control. This is called Self Sabotage, and it typically shows up just as everything is starting to go really good in your quest to achieve your goals.
I teach my clients to recognize when Lizard Brain starts talking to them. They learn to recognize what triggers old habits and the warning signs associated with them, and we come up with easy counter measures to get things back on track.
Humans are kind of like big computers in the sense that our identities are formed by our Past Programming. This programming is all of the information you were given at an early age in life. It forms your beliefs about who you are, where you fit in the world, and how that world works. These beliefs have pretty much gotten you to where you are now by shaping your thought processes, actions, and problem solving. Sometimes (often times) these beliefs limit our ability to grow beyond what we currently are.
Reprogramming yourself is a very daunting and complicated thing to do…but it can be done. I help my clients get past the sticking points of their limiting beliefs by showing them how powerful Action is. You will always get more of what you are focused on, so I train them to focus on the actions of making change rather than what it is they want to change.
You are completely unique, or as Dr. Suess said, “Today You are You, that is truer than true. There is no one alive who is Youer than You.” If we hold the good doctor’s words to be self evident, then why do we ever expect to get the same results that someone else got from a diet, weight loss program, or workout plan?
I work individually with every client to make sure that their experience is completely tailored to meet their needs, availability, and accessibility. Without this key element, any programming given will not be optimized for them and not deliver the best results in the shortest amount of time.
What is equally important to having a personalized program, is having the right support. Having someone with the knowledge to shift gears or make changes to your program based on the results you are getting (or not getting) is the key to long term success. You also need someone in your corner that knows exactly how to communicate the most effectively with you. Do you need kid gloves and gently reminders, or are you the type of person that needs a drill sergeant? A professionally trained and certified health and wellness coach can do all of this, and more.
Working with an accountability coach is not cheap. There is a limited number of hours in the week for a coach to work with clients, which limits the number of people they can help…which affects the price tag. But think of all the money and time you have wasted on trying other methods and not seeing change. How much have you spent on diets, pills, wraps, books, meal plans, gym memberships, boot camp classes, yoga, and more? If the trend continues, how much more money will you waste? How much is your time worth?
When my clients finish one of my programs they always say something on the lines of, “I wish I had known all of this sooner”. I strive to make sure my clients get the most for their money. They are not just losing weight or changing their habits, they are learning what it takes to sustain their new lifestyle. I coach them on how to turn all of their new healthy habits into a lifestyle that lasts.
It’s possible to go on a crash diet and lose a lot of weight quickly, but that is unsustainable. You can’t deprive yourself for ever. What you want from a weight loss program is real results that are healthy, easily maintained, and don’t require militant exercise and dieting to achieve. But you also want them as fast as possible.
I feel that quality beats quantity every day of the week. It’s better to lose 15 lbs and learn how to manage a lifestyle to maintain the healthy habits that lead to those results, than to lose 30 lbs and gain it back.
