How Weight Loss Coaching Works To Prevent Heart Disease
Did you know that Heart Disease kills one American every 36 seconds. It remains the number one cause of death in the US. It is one of highest killers of men and women all over the globe, and is 90% preventable in most cases. And in many cases can it can even be reversed.
Since 2019, the world has been thrust into a pandemic situation where the vast majority of deaths and hospitalizations from Covid-19 have 2 or more comorbidities like obesity, high blood pressure, and heart disease. Because of this, more and more people are looking for information on how to lose weight to avoid risk. In this article I will show you the many ways weight loss coaching works to prevent heart disease.
3 Areas of Concern
By working with a knowledgeable health and wellness coach you can focus on improving 3 key areas of concern to prevent or even reverse heart disease.
- Maintaining an ideal body weight
- Improving cardiovascular function
- Lowering and managing stress
Obesity and Weight Loss
One of the best ways you can begin the process of improving heart health is to maintain a healthy body weight. Obesity is a major risk factor for heart disease, and losing weight impacts many factors in the body that lead to increased risk of cardiovascular disease.
First of all, losing weight lowers blood pressure. The more overweight you are, the harder your heart has to pump blood. This raises your blood pressure which can cause kidney damage, heart disease, and strokes. Most people who take blood pressure medicine, notice that they need to have their prescription adjusted soon after losing as little as 10 pounds.
Losing weight also lowers your risk of developing diabetes. Type 2 diabetes elevates your blood sugar, which puts you at risk of heart attacks. Losing weight can also lower your cholesterol. Now, it’s true that just being overweight doesn’t necessarily mean that you have high cholesterol. But…if you are overweight and eat a diet of highly processed fatty/fast foods, you can have high cholesterol. Lowering cholesterol balances the fats in your blood and improves heart function.
Cardiovascular Performance
Being an active person who moves your body helps your cardiovascular system health in so many ways. Daily activity and exercise helps you lose weight more effectively than just dieting alone. It makes it easier for you to maintain a healthy body weight. Regular activity also helps to lower blood pressure, moderate blood sugar levels, and raises the good (HDL) cholesterol in the blood.
Moderation is the key when it comes to physical activity. Especially if you are already in a risk group, or have never exercised. But the key to making massive improvements in your heart health is 30 minutes of cardiovascular activity at least 5 days per week. Varying the activity is a great way to make it fun, and keep boredom at bay. Try workout classes, dancing, running, walking, and playing sports.
Stress Management
Un-managed physical and emotional stress can create complications that lead to heart disease risk. Your body has a natural defense mechanism that reacts to stress. It’s designed to keep us alive, but when you live with long-term or chronic stress, it becomes counter productive to your health and wellness.
When your body’s stress response is triggered, the stress hormone called cortisol is released into the blood stream. Long term exposure to stress and elevated cortisol levels have been linked to high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and blood sugar sensitivity. These of course are all common heart disease risk factors we have been talking about already.
Why Working With a Health Coach Works
Working with a coach that specializes in helping people lose weight and improve heart function is by and far the best way for you to reach your healthy goals. A coach guides you to make healthy choices, keep you on track, and hold you to the highest version of yourself you can think of. But good coaches don’t just tell you what to do.They also ask questions that can help you uncover limiting beliefs that might be holding you back.
A good weight loss for heart health coaching program provides:
- The right system (the right steps in the right order)
- The right support (the ability the change the program as you change)
- The right accountability (that friendly nudge or kick in the pants if you need it)
At Up For It Coaching we use our proven three tier system to teach you techniques for reducing and managing stress, how to eat for your unique body, as well as create and implement an exercise and activity program that matches your ability and accessibility.
