Well…we are already a few weeks into 2019. How are you doing with your New Year’s Resolution? Are you staying on track? Have you veered off course slightly, or have you already given up?
Look, it’s not your fault. New Year’s Resolutions are actually bullshit. At least the usual approach to a resolution is. Many…well, let’s say “most” folks approach the coming New Year with just an idea of what they want to accomplish. An idea without a plan is destined to fail from the very beginning.
For most, a New Years Resolution sounds something like, “I’m going to lose some weight in 2019”. On the surface, it sounds like a great plan. But, there is nothing actionable about it. “I’m going to lose some weight”, is too broad in scope. There is no clear starting point, and no end goal to achieve.
In order to achieve any goal, you need a clear path and action plan. How do you start? What comes next? How do I know I’m making progress? And, that’s just the beginning of the questions you need to be able to answer on your fitness journey.
Need Help Getting Started? Here’s a few tips…
- Focus on small Actionable Steps instead of Long Term Goals: Your New Year Resolution is probably too broad in scope. This presents a problem when it comes time to create a gameplan to achieve it. Instead of stating that you, “Want to lose some weight this year”, opt instead for something like, “I want to lose 4 lbs per week for the next 6 weeks”. Now we have something we can actually achieve if we plan accordingly. We then start breaking that small goal into even smaller actionable steps. This is how progress is made.
- Have someone that can hold you Accountable: It’s a well and good to have a solid actionable plan in front of you, but if there’s no accountability you’ll likely fall short of the mark. Who can hold you to the standard that you have set for yourself? Is it a loved one? A Health Coach? A friend? It doesn’t really matter, as long as they will help keep you on track with your goals and encourage you when you feel like allowing yourself to fail.
- Share your journey with others: Blogging and posting about your journey to better yourself is a great way to keep yourself encouraged, and motivated to continue. Share your feelings about your journey, and your victories. Share about your struggles also. Gaining an audience, no matter how small, for your daily inspiration will make you look forward to the next trip to the gym. Sometimes these blogs and micro-blogs can be motivating to your friends and family, and they may want to join you.
- Pick one small thing you can change everyday: Are the lifestyle changes you want to make seeming like too much to undertake all at once? No problem. Chop them up into small easy to attack pieces. Or as I like to say, “Keep your goals Digestible“. What is one small thing you can do today to move yourself towards your end goals? Is it drinking 10 more ounces of water? Or would it be, eating one healthy meal? Once you have a small goal down…add to it. That’s called Progress, and it’s how winning is done.
